Type species: Torotrogla mima Kethley, 1970 by original designation.
Diagnosis. FEMALE. Medium sized mites (total body length 600–950). Gnathosoma . Hypostomal apex with 1 pair of median protuberances. Lateral hypostomal teeth absent. Peritremes M-shaped. Movable cheliceral digit harpoon-like, each with 3 teeth. Stylophore rounded or constricted posteriorly. Idiosoma . Six pairs of propodonotal setae present arranged 3–2–1. Propodonotal shield entire, without pocket-like structures, bearing bases of setae vi, ve, si and c1. Two hysteronotal shields around or near bases of setae d1 present or absent. Setae d1, d2 and e2 long. Pygidial shield present. Terminal setae f2 and h2 long, f1 short, h1 long or short. Pseudanal and genital setal series represented by 2 pairs each. Aggenital series with 5–8 pairs of setae. All idiosomal setae smooth. Legs. Legs I–IV subequal in thickness. Antaxial and paraxial members of claw pair subequal in size and shape, basal angles absent. Apodemes I divergent, fusion of apodemes I and II indiscernible, both apodemes similar in size and shape. Legs with full complement of setae.
MALE. Characters as in females except: total body length 570–710; movable cheliceral digit styletiform edentate; hysteronotal shield fused to pygidial shield; setae d1, d2 and e2 short; terminal setae f2 short, h2 long; aggenital series with 4–6 pairs of setae.
Host range. This genus is associated with passeriform birds of the families Alaudidae , Cardinalidae , Corvidae , Emberizidae , Fringillidae , Mimidae , Muscicapidae , Ptilogonatidae , Prunellidae , Pycnonotidae , Thraupidae and Turdidae ( Table 14).
Habitat. Quills of secondaries and tertiaries.
Species included. This genus comprises 16 species present in two regions: Palaearctic (9 species) and Nearctic (7). The Palaeractic fauna includes: T. calcarius , T. cardueli , T. gaudi , T. lusciniae , T. lullulae , T. merulae , T. modularis , T. pycnonotus sp. nov., and T. rubeculi .
