Type species: Neosyringophilopsis acathizus Skoracki and Sikora, 2005 by original designation.
Diagnosis. FEMALE. Medium-sized mites, total body length 630–900. Gnathosoma . Hypostomal apex with one pair of long, sharp-ended protuberances. Two pairs of sausage-like hypostomal lips present. Lateral hypostomal teeth absent. Peritremes M-shaped, each branch with clearly visible chambers. Movable cheliceral digit dentate, each with 3 teeth. Stylophore constricted posteriorly. Idiosoma . Propodonotal shield without pocket-like structures, entire or divided longitudinaly. Six pairs of propodonotal setae present, arranged 3–1–2 or 3–1–1–1. Setae c1 and se situated at same transverse level or setae c1 located slightly anterior to level of setae se. Hysteronotal shield variable, present or absent, divided longitudinally or entire, fused or not to pygidial shield. Hysteronotal setae d1, d2 and e2 medium in size or long. Terminal setae f2, h1 and h2 long, f1 short or long. Each pseudanal and genital setal series represented by 2 pairs. Aggenital series with 3 pairs of setae. All idiosomal setae smooth. Legs. Legs I–IV subequal in thicknes and size. Antaxial and paraxial members of claw pair subequal in size and shape, without basal angle. Apodemes I divergent, not fused to apodemes II. Setae l’GIV absent.
MALE. Characters as in female except: total body length 530–580; hypostomal apex with one pair of small, sharp-ended protuberances or smooth; movable cheliceral digit edentate; hysteronotal setae d2 medium in length or short, d1 and e2 short; terminal setae f2 short, h2 long; aggenital series with 2 pairs of setae.
Host range. Mites of this genus are associated with passeriform birds of the families Aegithalidae , Sylviidae , Timaliidae and Troglodytidae ( Table 12).
Habitat. Quills of flight feathers: primaries and secondaries.
Species included. Presently, the world fauna of this genus includes 7 species described from the Palaearctic (5 species), Nearctic (1), Ethiopian (1) and Australian (1) regions. The Palaearctic fauna comprises: N. aegithali , N. garrulaxi , N. locustellus , N. phylloscopi and N. troglodytis .
