Type species: Philoxanthornea anoa Kethley, 1970 by original designation.
Diagnosis. FEMALE. Small-sized quill mites (length 520–600). Gnathosoma . Hypostomal apex without protuberances. Two pairs of hypostomal lips present. Lateral hypostomal teeth absent. Peritremes M-shaped, with clearly visible chambers in each branch. Movable cheliceral digits styletiform, edentate. Stylophore rounded posteriorly. Idiosoma . All idiosomal setae smooth or slightly ornamented. Six pairs of propodonotal setae present arranged 2– 2–2. Propodonotal shield entire, without pocket-like structures, bearing bases of setae vi, ve, si, se and c1. Hysteronotal shield fused to pygidial shield. Hysteronotal setae d1, d2 and e2 short. Terminal setae f1, f2, h1 short, h2 long. Two pairs of pseudanal, 2 pairs of genital and 3 pairs of aggenital setae present. Legs. Legs I slightly thicker than III–IV. Apodemes I parallel, not fused to apodemes II. Antaxial and paraxial members of claw pair subequal in size and shape, with basal angle. Leg setae dGII, vsI and vsII absent.
MALE. Characters as in female except: total body length 450–465; all idiosomal setae smooth; hysteronotal shield not fused to pygidial shield; 2 pairs of aggenital setae present; apodemes I weakly divergent.
Host range. This genus is associated with chradriiform birds of the family Laridae ( Table 17).
Habitat. Quills of coverts and secondaries.
Species included. At present only 3 species has been described. One species from the Nearctic region and 2 species from the Palaearctic region: Philoxanthornea clarki and P. dubinini .
