DESCRIPTION

Male

Measurements and ratios ♂ (n = 5): LB: 9.5 – 10 mm, lB: 5 – 5.5 mm; LB/lB: 1.69 (1.62 – 1.76); LP/lP: 0.51 (0.47 – 0.53); LE/lE: 1.28 (1.24 – 1.36).

Body: laterally convex, relatively short, slightly bent, broader in middle of elytra; abdomen concave; short process at base of prosternum rounded; entirely reddish deep brown, except clypeus, lateral margins of pronotum, antennae, tibiae, femora and underside reddish, slightly shining.

Head: broad and covered with tubercles; frons smooth in middle; clypeus rounded, totally reflexed.

Antennae 10-segmented with club longer than funicle.

Thorax: pronotum rectangular, broader than long; sides uniformly rounded from base to apex, with all margins carinate; anterior angles slightly projecting and reaching posterior margin of eyes; transversely striated; impressed point on lateral margins.

Scutellum triangular with rounded sides, punctate.

Elytra: longer than broad; epipleura complete; costae slightly elevated; intervals with crescent shaped points; striae formed by a line of close crescent shaped points; humeral and apical calli slightly marked.

Pygidium: laterally rounded, carinate along anal plate; transversely striated; slightly projecting postero-ventrally, and not surpassing apex of elytra.

Legs: protibiae tridentate; pro- and mesotarsal larger claws cleft; metatarsus with larger claw twice longer than smaller and uncleft.

Hairs: upper and underside covered with short white, squamous, decumbent setae; close on apical calli; separated, erected brownish setae on lateral margins from canthus to apex of elytra; transversal line of erect brownish setae inserted in setigerous points on all sternites; long erected white setae on basal part of head; disc of pygidium with long erected white setae.

Aedeagus: in lateral view, left paramere flattened and spatulate; right paramere strongly reduced and flattened; in dorsal view, left paramere elongate, laterally sinuate and apex rounded; right paramere strongly reduced and triangular, sinuate to apico-internal angle; apico-internal angle strongly concave.

Female

Measurements and ratios ♀ (n = 2): LB: 9.5 – 10 mm, lB: 5 – 5.5 mm; LB/lB: 1.54 – 1.66; LP/lP: 0.51; LE/lE: 1.15 – 1.26.

Differs from ♂ by: laterally more convex; club of antennae shorter and apical tooth of protibia rounded and shorter.

DERIVATIO NOMINIS. Dedicated to Mrs. Cornelia Main, the wife of Dr. Georg Goergen (Cotonou, Benin)

DISTRIBUTION. Known from Guinea.

BIOLOGY. The species was collected in the months Mars to April and June to July.

DIAGNOSIS. Adoretus maini sp. nov. is slightly similar to A. similis Benderitter, 1922 but can be distinguished as follows:
