Melissodes bruneri (Cockerell) , M. ecuadoria Schrottky & Bertoni , M. nigroaenea (Smith) , M. sexcinta (Lepeletier) , M. tintinnans (Holmberg) and M. rufodentata Smith are the South American species of this genus ( Urban 1973). These species are quite similar to each other, especially the males, which can be differentiated mainly by the color of the pilosity. The only species of the genus occurring in Chile is Melissodes ecuadoria .
