Carpophthorella Hendel View in CoL
Carpophthorella Hendel, 1914: 80 View in CoL ; 1915: 448. Type species Carpophthorella magnifica Hendel View in CoL , by original designation.
The genus Carpophthorella Hendel View in CoL is a small genus and appears to be closely related to Chaetellipsis Bezzi View in CoL , except the males of Chaetellipsis View in CoL lack frontal setae. Larvae of Carpophthorella View in CoL spp. feed on bamboo shoots, but only the females appear to be attracted to cut shoots. A good description of the genus has been given by Hancock and Drew (1999).
The work of Hardy (1988) and Hancock and Drew (1999) indicates there are only four Carpophthorella spp. in Asia, namely C. capillata (Bezzi) , C. magnifica Hendel , C. nigrifascia (Walker) and C. semipennata Hering. These are placed in two groups, one containing species with sexes slightly dissimilar ( magnifica and nigrifascia ), while the other consists of species with very dissimilar sexes ( capillata and semipennata ).
Including the new species described here ( C. sookae ) but excluding C. semipennata (see Remarks below), there are now three species of Carpophthorella from Malaysia, namely C. capillata (Bezzi) and C. nigrifasica (Walker) from East Malaysia, and C. sookae new species from Peninsular Malaysia.
