Archaeoscina stebbingi Woltereck, 1909: 154 View in CoL –156, fig. 13. Bulycheva 1955: 1048 (table). Vinogradov et al. 1982: 46.

Type material

AThe unique type of A. stebbingi , a male about 3.0 mm long, could not be found in any major European museum and is considered lost. Wolterecks (1909) description is brief and his illustration of the whole specimen schematic, making it difficult to compare characters with other specimens. Thus, the status of this species is in doubt. The type locality is the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, near 15°S, 100°W (Albatross Stn. 4704).

Diagnosis

Based on description and figure by Woltereck (1909) of unique male specimen. Pleon length about half pereon. Antennae 1 as long as head and first three pereonites; callynophore slightly longer than peduncle. Antennae 2; length about 0.6x A1. Mandibular palp; length third article about 1.5x (according to illustration) or 3.0x (according to Wolterecks remarks) first two articles combined. Pereopod 5 the longest, almost twice length P7. Pereopods 3–7; dactylus sharp, about 0.5x length propodus for P3–6; slightly longer for P7.

Remarks

The similarity of this species to A. steenstrupi has already been discussed under that species. The relatively long and slender pereopod 5 distinguishes this species from all its currently recognized congeners.

Distribution

Known only from the type locality, the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, near 15°S, 100°W, in the Humboldt current.

Bulycheva (1955) lists this species as part of the Kurile Islands, northwest Kuroshio fauna, presumably in error.
