The karyotype of G. permaxillaris , endemic to Lake Tanganyika, is composed of 2n = 44 chromosomes including 10 m /sm and 34 st/a (FN = 54) (Tab. I). The first metacentric pair and the first acrocentric pair are twice larger than the following ones. The 18S rRNA genes are located in the short arms of a small acrocentric pair ( Fig. 2 View Figure 2 ).
