The Asian and Australian Spiranthes species have in the past often been lumped into one highly variable species, S. sinensis . Recently two comprehensive phylogenetic studies of the group have been undertaken aimed at elucidating its phylogeny ( Surveswaran et al. 2018, Pace et al. 2018); in the latter a species-level classification was also proposed. However, different tree topologies suggest that the relationships within this group are not satisfactorily understood as yet, and we therefore prefer to use the traditional broad view of S. sinensis .
