Etymology: grandis, Latin for considerable size, big, large.

Morphological characteristics: male and female mostly brown ( Figs. 4C–D View FIGURE 4 , 6D–F View FIGURE 6 , 12D–F View FIGURE 12 , 20A–C View FIGURE 20 ), except for pale areas (pale blue in life) on the posterior side of the epicranium, labrum, clypeus, and mandibles; mesepisternum and mesepimeron with a metallic green longitudinal band. Genital ligula circular, internal fold width more than 1/3 of S2 ( Fig. 9C View FIGURE 9 ), surface entire, reaching anterior fold of S2 ( Fig. 9D View FIGURE 9 ). Male cerci long and prominent, with a strong basal tooth, edge of median portion irregular without denticles; primary curvature type III ( Fig. 10C View FIGURE 10 ); secondary curvature type I ( Fig. 10D View FIGURE 10 ). Apophyses of paraprocts less than 1/3 of the cerci length, apices straight ( Fig. 10D View FIGURE 10 ).
Lateral valves of the ovipositor with a row of small denticles that grow from the base to the apex, and basal plate with posterior and ventral margins split ( Fig. 14B View FIGURE 14 ).
Remarks: this species has the largest distribution area in the genus, with a continuous occurrence from Canada to Colombia and Venezuela. In Colombia, it is found along the western slopes of the Cordillera Oriental, the Cordillera Central, the Cauca River valley, and the vicinity of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta , in lateral pools of streams, between 30 and 2100 m ( Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13 ).
