Hemilophopsis simius View in CoL , sp. nov.

( Figs 22–25 View FIGURES 22–30. 22–25 )

Description. Male. Head (except dark reddish brown area of apex of genae and area of clypeus), ventral and lateral sides of prothorax, meso- and metathorax, femora, and abdomen orange; scape dark brown dorsally, gradually reddish brown toward ventral side; pedicel, antennomere III and antennomeres VIII–XI dark brown; antennomere IV dark brown on basal 3/4, reddish brown on distal quarter; antennomeres V–VI pale yellow; antennomere VII reddish brown, more yellowish on narrow basal area; palpi pale yellow; pronotum orange, lighter centrally and laterally on basal third, except dark brown, sub-triangular macula each side, surpassing basal half (basal area between these maculae brownish); elytra mostly dark brown, slightly lighter on distal third, except pale yellow triangular humeral region (this area laterally reaching about middle) and reddish brown triangular macula along suture on basal sixth; pro- and mesotibiae reddish brown, darker ventrally; metatibiae dark reddish brown basally and distally, dark brown on wide central area; pro- and mesotarsi reddish brown, gradually yellowish brown toward distal segments, except brownish claws; metatarsomere I dark brown and remaining segments reddish brown, except dark claws.

Head. Frons finely, moderately abundantly punctate except smooth central gibbosity; with pale yellow pubescence partially obscuring integument, more yellowish white close to lower eye lobes, except glabrous central gibbosity, interspersed with sparse, long, erect pale yellow setae. Vertex finely, moderately abundantly punctate; with golden pubescence partially obscuring integument; with a few long, erect yellowish setae close to upper eye lobes. Area behind eyes with golden pubescence partially obscuring integument, gradually yellowish white toward gena (more silvery depending on angle of light source). Genae with yellowish white pubescence partially obscuring integument (more silvery depending on angle of light source) except narrow glabrous distal area. Antennal tubercles with yellowish white pubescence not obscuring integument. Median groove distinct from clypeus to prothoracic margin. Gulamentum glabrous. Distance between upper eye lobes 0.12 times length of scape; in frontal view, distance between lower eye lobes 0.49 times length of scape. Antennae 2.1 times elytral length, reaching elytral apex at base of distal third of antennomere VI; scape, pedicel and antennomeres III–X with long, erect sparse setae ventrally (shorter, sparser toward X); antennal formula (ratio) based on length of antennomere III: scape = 0.70; pedicel = 0.13; IV = 0.77; V = 0.46; VI = 0.41; VII = 0.34; VIII = 0.27; IX = 0.24; X = 0.20; XI = 0.24.

Thorax. Pronotum moderately coarsely and abundantly punctate; with golden pubescence nearly obscuring integument except yellowish brown pubescence, not obscuring integument on dark area, more pale yellow centrally on basal area, and nearly glabrous on small central area before middle; with long, erect, sparse yellowish setae. Sides of prothorax with moderately sparse punctures slightly coarser than on pronotum; with golden pubescence not obscuring integument. Prosternum and mesoventrite with pale yellow pubescence distinctly not obscuring integument (slightly denser, more golden laterally on mesoventrite); mesanepisternum, mesepimeron, metanepisternum and sides of metaventrite with golden pubescence, abundant, but not obscuring integument; central area of metaventrite with golden pubescence distinctly sparser than laterally, except tuft distally each side of central discrimen. Scutellum with yellowish white pubescence obscuring integument. Elytra. Coarsely, abundantly punctate on basal 2/3, slightly coarser dorsally close to humeral carina, nearly smooth on distal third; with minute golden pubescence on yellow basal area (abundant, but not obscuring integument), yellowish white pubescence on reddish brown basal area (partially obscuring integument), more white close to suture, longitudinal white pubescent band, not well-defined, each side of dorsal basal quarter (not obscuring integument), yellowish brown pubescence not obscuring integument on large basal dark area, brownish, partially obscuring integument, before distal third with dense beige pubescence, except brownish pubescence close to lateral margin; erect setae more abundant on basal half. Legs. Femora with yellowish white pubescence not obscuring integument, ventrally interspersed with long, erect, sparse yellowish setae (sparser on profemora).

Abdomen. Ventrites with yellowish white pubescence not obscuring integument, interspersed with long, erect, sparse yellowish setae; apex of ventrite V centrally widely emarginate.

Dimensions. Total length, 8.80; prothoracic length, 1.75; basal prothoracic width, 1.75; distal prothoracic width, 1.65; widest prothoracic width, 1.90; humeral width, 2.30; elytral length, 6.00.

Type material. Holotype male from FRENCH GUIANA: Kourou (Montagne des Singes, pk 7), 2.IV.1984, G. Tavakilian col. [# 720 ex collection IRD] ( MNHN).

Etymology. Latin, “ simius ” which means monkey. Allusion to the type locality (Monkey’s Mount) and to the fact that this Calliini looks like a Hemilophini .
