Chauliodes fraternus McLachlan, 1869: 37 View in CoL .

Diagnosis. Forewings with median transverse band cloudy and indistinct. Aedeagus trapezoidal with apical incision in ventral view.

Description. Forewing length 39–50 mm, hindwing length 35–45 mm.

Head yellowish brown, with ocellar triangle and area outside posterior ocelli dark. Compound eyes dark, ocelli yellowish brown with black inner margin. Antenna black. Mouthparts brownish yellow; maxillary palpus and labial palpus with apical portion dark, mandible with apical half reddish brown.

Thorax dark except for pronotum, which is pale yellow medially. Legs pale brown, with short, dense, brown setae; tibiae and tarsi much darker, tarsal claws reddish brown. Wings hyaline with pale brown marks; pterostigma long, pale yellow. Forewing with brown diffuse band before pterostigma extending to Cu, and sometimes with some spots at basal costal area; basal marks somewhat connected; apical marks small and dotted along longitudinal veins. Hindwing similarly marked, but with base mostly hyaline; median transverse band much narrower than in forewing, only extending from costal area to M. Veins brown except for costal crossveins darker. Rs 5branched with R2 apically 4 branched; 3 crossveins between R1 and Rs; M 2branched; 1A 2branched.

Abdomen dark. Male tenth tergum ( Figs. 18, 20 View FIGURES 18 – 21 ) in lateral view subquadrate; in dorsal view its apex strongly and globally inflated. Aedeagus ( Figs. 18–19 View FIGURES 18 – 21 ) strongly sclerotized, flattened and broadened, in ventral view subtrapezoidal with apical incision; in lateral view apical half moderately inflated and slightly curved dorsally. Female eighth sternum broad with posterior margin prominent; tenth tergum ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES 18 – 21 ) subtriangular with tip directed dorsally; gonapophyses ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES 18 – 21 ) subquadrate with round tip, directed dorsally.

Distribution. China (Anhui, Fujian, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Shandong, Sichuan, Yunnan, Zhejiang).

Remarks. This species seems to be closely related to N. azumai Asahina from the Yayeyama Islands of southern Ryukyus in having the similar wing pattern, but can be easily distinguished by the aedeagus with the moderately inflated apex in lateral view. In N. azumai , the apex of aedeagus is not inflated ( Asahina, 1988). Weele (1910) placed N.

fraternus as a subspecies of N. sinensis . However, according to his photo of this species, R3 and R4 are obviously not curved backward apically, showing a great difference from the N. sinensis complex. Therefore, N. fraternus is a distinguished species and should not be a member of the N. sinensis complex.
