Distribution. East Pacific: Panama (Secas Is., vicinity of Ciudad de Panamá, Bahía Piña in Darién), Colombia and Ecuador ( Werding & Haig 1982; Harvey 1999; Hiller et al. 2004).

Ecology. Rocky intertidal, known depth range: 0–9 m; typically found in or near boreholes of the sea urchin Echinometra vanbrunti A. Agassiz ( Werding & Haig 1982; Harvey 1999).

Remarks. Gore & Abele (1976) recorded Clastotoechus diffractus (Haig, 1957) from Panama based on material from Ciudad de Panamá (Punta Paitilla) and this record was replicated by several subsequent authors ( Gore 1982; Rodríguez et al. 2005). However, as discussed by Harvey (1999), the Panamanian record of C. diffractus by Gore & Abele (1976) must be referred to C. gorgonensis Werding & Haig, 1982 , originally described from Colombia (Gorgona Island). Clastotoechus diffractus seems to be restricted to the Pacific coast of Mexico, ranging from Cabo San Lucas, Baja California, to Acapulco, Guerrero ( Harvey 1999).
