Previous records from Panama. Haig (1968); Gore & Abele (1976).
Distribution. East Pacific: Clipperton I., Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama (Coiba Is., Bahía Honda in Veraguas, Punta Mala, Taboga Is., Las Perlas Is.), Colombia, Ecuador (including Galápagos) and Peru ( Haig 1968; Gore & Abele 1976; Gore 1982; Moscoso 2012; present study).
Ecology. Rocky and mixed rock-rubble-sand intertidal and shallow subtidal, often on rocky reefs rich in rocks encrusted by sponges and coralline algae, known depth range: typically 0–12 m, exceptionally 44 m; under rocks and coral debris, in crevices of dead coral heads (especially Pocillopora ) and other shelters ( Gore 1982; present study).
Remarks. Petrolisthes haigae was previously regarded as the probable eastern Pacific sister species of the amphi-Atlantic P. marginatus Stimpson, 1859 (= P. cessacii A. Milne-Edwards, 1878 ), differing from the latter by the carapace front broader and rounded (vs. narrower and oblong in P. marginatus ); the median frontal lobe shorter and broader (vs. more prominent and narrower in P. marginatus ); and the P1 robust, with the lateral margin of the propodus rounded (vs. slender, with the lateral margin of the propodus nearly straight in P. marginatus ) ( Ferreira & Tavares 2017). However, Hiller et al. (2006) recovered a sister relationship of P. haigae with P. hirtispinosus Lockington, 1878 , and not with P. marginatus .
The colour pattern of the Panamanian specimens of P. haigae is relatively homogeneous dorsally, however, presenting some variation on the ventral side ( Figs. 54–56 View FIGURE 54 View FIGURE 55 View FIGURE 56 ). For instance, the colour of the ventral side of the P1 palms may vary from yellowish to intense pink-red ( Figs. 54B View FIGURE 54 , 55B View FIGURE 55 , 56C–E View FIGURE 56 ). Noteworthy, the porcelain crab from Galápagos identified as P. haigae in the colour photograph in Hickman & Zimmerman (2000) is generally much darker and could represent at least a genetically isolated population.
