( USNM 210868 About USNM ), Punta Galeta, STRI Panama Survey, 07.06.1979 [examined and identified by R.H. Gore, 1982]; 5 specimens, cl cw indet. ( USNM 1163357 About USNM ), Caledonia Bay (Bahía de Caledonia), shore, leg. W.L. Schmitt, 03.04.1939 [examined and identified by A. Hiller, 2011]. Extralimital material. French Antilles: 1 male, cl cw indet. ( FLMNH UF 31931 ), Saint Martin, Sta. STM-013, off Mont Vernon , south of Petite Clef Island (“ Little Key ”), 18°05’59.3”N, 63°01’18.3”W, depth 0–2 m, leg. J. Slapcinski et al., 11.04.2012 (fcn BSTM-0344) GoogleMaps . Bonaire: 1?male, cl cw indet. ( RMNH. CRUS.D.57962), opposite “ Alice in Wonderland ” dive site, intertidal, leg. M. Faasse, 09.11.2019 .
Previous records from Panama. None.
Distribution. West Atlantic: Cuba, E and S Lesser Antilles; Panama (Punta Galeta, Bahía de Caledonia), Colombia and Venezuela ( Rodríguez et al. 2005; Diez & Lira 2017; Poupin 2018; Hiller & Werding 2019; present study). East Pacific: Mexico, Costa Rica (including Cocos I.), Colombia, Ecuador (including Galápagos) ( Haig 1960; Rodríguez et al. 2005; Lazarus-Agudelo & Cantera-Kintz 2007; García-Madrigal & Andréu-Sánchez 2009; Hiller & Werding 2019).
Ecology. Intertidal and shallow subtidal, known depth range: 0–20 m; rocky shores and reefs, under boulders, also in coral rocks and on “sand and shell bottoms” in deeper water ( Haig 1960; Gore 1982).
Remarks. Despite having a wide distribution in the tropical eastern Pacific (type locality: Galápagos) and the Caribbean Sea, P. tonsorius does not appear to be a common species. Although Hiller & Werding (2019) seem to have confirmed the status of P. tonsorius as a single species with transisthmian distribution, the average distance between the populations from the eastern Pacific and western Atlantic in the 16S rRNA gene fragment was 4.8%, which is rather significant (see also Hiller et al. 2006: fig. 3). They also noted an overlapping intraspecific variation in the colour pattern on each side of the Isthmus of Panama, with the more common brown colour morph and the less common bluish colour morph ( Figs. 73 View FIGURE 73 , 90E View FIGURE 90 ; see also García-Madrigal & Andréu-Sánchez 2009: fig. 5D; Hiller & Werding 2019: fig. 1).
