Onychia japonica Ashmead, 1904: 76

Callaspidia japonica (Ashmead) Dalla Torre & Kieffer, 1910: 67

Type material 1 ♀ ( USNM); label data: “ Hakone ”, “ Japan Koebele ”, “ Type nº 7135 U.S.N.M.” (red label), “ Onychia japonica Ashm.

Aditional material. TAIWAN: 1 ♂ ( CNCI) Wasche, 1150m 3/V/1983, H. Townes leg.

Diagnosis. This species is similar to C. formosana , the scutum has a strong protuberance (hump) when seen in profile and the pronotum is transversely carinated. In C. japonica the scutum is less transversely carinated than in C. formosana and the gena is angled.

Redescription. Length. Male 4.10 mm.; Female 4.30 mm.

Coloration. Body mostly black. Scutellum, tegulae, metanotum, propodeal carinae and petiole brown. Antenna darkish brown but apical margins of each antennomere lighter. Legs brown, the first and second ones lighter.

Head. Frons strongly rugose and coriaceous, prominent centrally, frontal carina present. Lateral frontal carina coriaceous wide and sinuate, space between it and compound eye strongly coriaceous and with transverse carinae. Vertex in dorsal view strongly coriaceous, with two cells. Gena alutaceous, in lateral view angled behind eye, with numerous transverse carinae. Occiput shining and with transverse carinae.

Mesosoma. Lateral surface of pronotum coriaceous, with irradiant carinae, which are thicker ventrally than dorsally, where they are relatively thin. Mesoescutum in dorsal view coriaceous and slightly rugose, with weak striae, which are stronger between notauli. Notauli not as wide posteriorly as in the medial sulcus, which is very wide (four times wider than long), moreover, the notauli are very narrow in the anterior half. Notauli, as well as the medial sulcus, weakly alutaceous and transversally carinated. Parascutal sulcus smooth and shining, with some transverse carinae inside. Median ridge very prominent and strongly coriaceous, anteriorly curved. Mesonotum, in lateral view, with a strong prominence where the median mesoscutal furrow ends; a clear protuberance is also noticeable in the anterior part of the mesonotum. Interfoveal carina, in lateral view, slightly below the level of lateral margins of scutellum, these being parallel posteriorly. Propodeal carina weakly curved, very prominent, very wide and alutaceous or striated, the basal area with a wide depression. Central area of propodeum with strong transverse carinae laterally, smooth centrally.

Wings. R1 absent. R2 slightly curved.

Biology. Unknown.

Distribution. Oriental. Known from Japan; also from Taiwan new cite in this study.

Comments. It is not ruled out that Callaspidia japonica and Callaspidia formosana may be the same species. The scarce material studied does not allow us to confirm this possibility. The two species are differentiated mainly by sculptural characters that could be included within the range of intraspecific variation (see the species identification key) given the difference in size of the type material studied.
