Material examined. ACeguá-RS, Brazil, soil, five females (5 MarCh and 26 June 2012, 20 August 2013) and two heteromorphiC males (26 June 2012), ColleCted by A. da F. Duarte. Rodovia Geraldo de Barros, km 204, São Pedro- SP, Brazil, litter under Syagrus oleracea (Mart.) ( AreCaCeae ), one male (10 August 2000), ColleCted by A.R. Oliveira. NúCleo AgríCola Vale Ribeira, IAC, Pariquera-Açu-SP, Brazil, soil under Bactris setosa Mart. ( AreCaCeae ), one male (18 April 2000), ColleCted by A.R. Oliveira (deposited at ESALQ-USP).
Description of the heteromorphic male. Diagnosis. Dorsal idiosoma and gnathosoma similar to homeomorphiC male, sternogenitiventral shield with seven pairs of setae (st1–st5, Jv1 and Zv1); unsClerotised CutiCle with eight pairs of setae (Jv2–Jv5, Zv2–Zv5). Two pairs of elongate metapodal plates.
Dorsal idiosoma. Dorsal shield 387–415 long and 272–275 wide (at level of r6), 314–384 long and 231–280 wide in homeomorphiC male; mostly with transverse elongate retiCules, with 39 pairs of setae, inCluding two pairs of extra setae, and one (Jx3) or two (Jx2 and Jx3) unpaired setae. UnsClerotised lateral CutiCle with seven pairs of setae (r6, R1, R2, R4–R6, one UR). All setae sCimitar-shaped, exCept j1 and z1, setiform. Length of setae shown in Table 1.
UR1 18 (17–19) 28–30 Ventral idiosoma ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 5. 1 ). Sternogenitiventral shield 240–242 long and 64–70 wide (behind Coxae IV), with seven pairs of setae (st1–st5, Jv1 and Zv1). UnsClerotised CutiCle with eight pairs of setae (Jv 2– Jv 5, Zv 2– Zv 5) around anal shield. Length of setae shown in Table 2. Two anterior lobes of sternogenitiventral shield as sClerotised as remainder of the shield. Two pairs of elongate metapodal plates. Peritreme, gnathosoma and legs similar to those in homeomorphiC male.
Remarks. HeteromorphiC males have been reported for Cosmolaelaps vacua (MiChael, 1891) by GwiazdowiCz (2004), C. cuneifer (MiChael, 1891) by wisniewski (1982) and C. michaeli (Huhta & Karg, 2010) by Khalili-Moghdam & Saboori (2015). In C. vaccus and C. michaeli , the most distinCtive differenCe between homeomorphiC and heteromorphiC males is the prominent outgrowth in the ventrianal region of the holoventral shield of heteromorphiC males. Additionally, the heteromorphiC male of C. michaeli has leg IV distinCtly stronger than the others and with two spur-like ventral struCtures ( Khalili-Moghadam & Saboori, 2015), whereas the heteromorphiC male of C. vacuus has dorsal shield longer than the respeCtive homeomorphiC male ( GwiazdowiCz, 2004). In the C. guttulatus heteromorphiC male, the tarsus of leg IV is similar to the tarsi of the other legs and the dorsal shield of the homeomorphiC male is longer [463 (419–535)] than that in the heteromorphiC male [387–415].
