Diagnosis and comments
Augochlorodes politus sp. nov. is one of the smallest species in the genus and it is easily distinguished from the others for its polished, shiny mesoscutum. This species was collected in a few places in Paraná, most specimens coming from localities in the inner highlands (known as first and second ‘planaltos’ of Paraná). A single specimen from Alexandra, a locality situated in the coastal lowlands of Paraná, has a wider head and longer decumbent pubescence on the lateral surface of the propodeum. The known visited plants for the type series in Parque Estadual de Vila Velha are Galianthe elegans (Rubiaceae) and Chamaecrista desvauxii (Fabaceae) .
Description of female holotype
Measurements. Mhw: 1.40; mhl: 1.36; den: 1.03; iem: 0.71; cl: 0.32; c–a: 0.3; c–o: 0.91; ml: 1.02; abl: 5.52.
Head. Basal elevation of labrum circular; clypeus punctures very sparse, with a large impunctate area in the middle; supraclypeal area weakly punctured and without microreticulation; parocular area without a well-defined, darkened stripe, its lower portion punctures with uniform diameter; frons punctation deep and coarse.
Mesoscutum. Longitudinal sulcus weak; anterior border rounded; central surface without decumbent pubescence; punctures strong, sparse and of variable diameter; microreticulation hardly perceptible, surface shiny.
Scutellum . Erect setae densely branched.
Mesepisternum. Pubescence with long branches.
Metanotum. Covered with very long and plumose setae.
Metapostnotum. Dorsal surface less than twice as long as metanotum; longitudinal carinae extending over about one-half of its dorsal length.
Propodeum. Lateral surface with microreticulation restricted to its anterior portion; lateral surface with plumose pubescence.
Metasoma. Posterior margin of S2–S3 with fine and recurved setae, posterior margin of S4–S5 with thick and simple setae.
Body colour. Bright metallic green with light brown forelegs, mid- and hindlegs dark brown.
