( Figs. 11A–D View FIGURE 11 A – F. A – D , 12B View FIGURE 12 A – B. A , Tab. 1 View TABLE 1 )
Material examined. 0/1/0, Mahua stream, downstream of national park entrance, Crocker Range, Borneo, Malaysia, 5º 46.491 N 116º 25.770 E, alt. 865 m asl., 22-ix-2012; 2/1/0 (1/1/0 mounted), Mahua stream at crossing with main road, Crocker Range, Borneo, Malaysia, 5º 45.225 N 116º 26.085 E, alt. 752 m asl., 22-ix-2012.
Compared material. Atractides cognatus ( K. Viets, 1935) : Lectotype ♂, here designated, SMF 4423 Atractides spatiosus cognatus ♂, type, K.Viets 42771, Sumatra, Wai Negre, Bach, 22.7.1929 Thienem. coll; Paralectotype ♀, here designated, SMF 4433 Atractides spatiosus cognatus ♀, type, K.Viets 42772, Sumatra, Urwaldbach, 1.2.1929 Thienem coll. The original description does not contain a type designation.
Remarks. This species was originally described by K. Viets (1935) as subspecies of A. spatiosus . Later on Lundblad (1971) synonymized it with the stem species, but Pešić & Smit (2009) rejected this synonymization and raised A. spatiosus cognatus to full species rank, a point of view confirmed by our re-examination of the type series of A. spatiosus and A. cognatus . The latter species can be distinguished from A. spatiosus by the shorter S-1/2 interspace in both sexes and the slightly sclerotized excretory pore. Most character states of the Borneo specimens suggest attribution to A. cognatus but the diagnostic features of A. spatiosus and A. cognatus need reconsideration based on material from a larger geographical area. Probably, the populations from Thailand and Malaysia assigned by Pešić & Smit (2009) to A. cognatus represent an undescribed species ( Pešić et al. 2012b).
Distribution. Indonesia (Sumatra, E Java - K. Viets 1935) Borneo (our study).
