Protzia borneoensis n. sp.

( Fig. 2A–G View FIGURE 2 A – G )

Type series. Holotype female, dissected and slide mounted, torrential stream crossing main road Alab-Kota Kinabalu, Crocker Range, Borneo, Malaysia, 5º 50.039 N, 116º 20.156 E, alt. 1571 m asl, 24-ix-2012 Smit ( RMNH).

Diagnosis (Male unknown). Leg claws with 13–15 lateral and 4–5 medial clawlets. Genital field without sclerites, with 18–20 pairs of uniform Ac (elongated, length/width ratio 1.7–2.0, on short stalks, length stalk/Ac ratio 1.9–2.4) and 5–6 pairs of setae scattered between Ac. Palp relatively stout (length/height ratio P3, 1.0; P4, 3.1).

Description. Female: Coxae with fine pores, most setae of Cx-I+II concentrated to anterior tips, slightly flattened, with one medial seta and 1–2 lateral setae on Cx-III+IV. Leg claws with 13–15 lateral and 4–5 medial clawlets ( Fig. 2C View FIGURE 2 A – G ). Genital field without sclerites ( Fig. 2A View FIGURE 2 A – G ), with 18–20 pairs of homoiomorphic Ac (elongated, on short stalks) and 5–6 pairs of setae scattered between Ac; gonopore field smooth. Capitulum dorso-ventrally elevated and with short rostrum ( Fig. 2F View FIGURE 2 A – G ). Chelicera slender, with relatively short claw ( Fig. 2G View FIGURE 2 A – G ). Palp ( Figs. 2D–E View FIGURE 2 A – G ) relatively stout, P3 ventral margin straight.

Measurements —Idiosoma (ventral view: Fig. 2A View FIGURE 2 A – G ) length 1600, width 1050; posterior Ac (n = 4) length 33–39, width 18–20, length /width ratio 1.7–2.0, stalk length 14–18, length stalk/Ac ratio 1.9–2.4. Capitulum ventral length 231; chelicera total length 284, height 56, length /height ratio 5.05, basal segment length 206, claw relatively short, length 84, basal segment/claw ratio length 2.45. Palp: total length 349, dorsal length/height, dorsal length/height ratio: P1, 27/47, 0.57; P2, 94/65, 1.44; P3, 56/59, 0.96; P4, 131/42, 3.1; P5, 41/19, 2.16; length P2/P- 4 ratio 0.71; dorsal length of I-leg-2–6 ( Fig. 3B View FIGURE 3 A – E ): 78, 92, 123, 137, 138.

Male: Unknown.

Etymology. Named after the island where the new species was collected.

Remarks. Due to the shape of genital field (without sclerites and with 18–19 pairs of Ac), and leg claws (9–11 lateral and 3–4 medial clawlets), Protzia borneoensis n. sp. most closely resembles to P. b i r m an i c a Lundblad, 1941, known from a single male collected in a mountain stream in Northern Myanmar ( Lundblad 1967). The latter species differs in a stouter chelicera with more robust claw (basal segment/claw ratio length 1.65, calculated from figure, see Lundblad 1967, fig. 8C), Ac posteriorly longer than anteriorly, and a slightly lower number of leg clawlets.

Protzia javanensis ( K. Viets, 1935) , from Java ( K. Viets 1935, Lundblad 1936, 1971) can easily be distinguished due to the shape of the genital field (setae on a sclerotized bar flanking the whole genital field, 8–9 pairs of Ac).

Distribution. Borneo; known only from the locus typicus.
