Rhexinema Geitler 1942 , Biol. Gen. 16: 473 (diagnosis latina).

Emended diagnosis: The filaments are very short consisting of 2–10cells or 2-dimensional cell packages embedded in common mucilage. Branching is rudimentary. Vegetative cells are cylindrical, often curved, and uninucleate, with a parietal chloroplast containing one pyrenoid surrounded by starch grains. Reproduction occurs by vegetative division, and biflagellated zoospores possess a stigma and two contractile vacuoles.

Investigated strains: ACOI 592, SAG 463-1, SAG 466-2, SAG 29.93, SAG 8.90, UTEX 1570, UTEX 1710, ULVO-10 ( Figs 16–20 ).
