Distribution. Western Atlantic—Bermuda, USA (Florida), Bahamas, West Indies, Panama, Brazil (Ceará to Rio Grande do Sul) ( Christoffersen 1979, 1998; Bezerra & Coelho 2006—all references as S. brevicarpus ).

Previous records. Ubatuba ( Christoffersen 1979; Duarte & Nalesso 1996; Pinheiro et al. 1997; Morgado & Tanaka 2001); São Sebastião ( Christoffersen 1979; Nalesso et al. 1995; Duarte & Nalesso 1996; Amaral et al. 2010); São Sebastião Island (Municipality of Ilhabela), São Sebastião Channel, Santo Amaro Island (Municipality of Guarujá) and Itanhaém ( Christoffersen 1979); locality not mentioned (Ubatuba or São Sebastião?) ( Duarte & Morgado 1983); all records as S. brevicarpus .

Remarks. Synalpheus brevicarpus is a transisthmian species complex which includes several undescribed species ( Almeida et al. 2012a; Anker et al. 2012). We found two color patterns: a blue/green chelae and a pink/ orange chelae. Both patterns match the morphology of S. brevicarpus described by Herrick (1891). In our analyses, we discriminated specimens with both patterns from those without any color information. This discrimination might be useful to facilitate the future recognition of our material after a taxonomic revision is accomplished.
