Type material. Female holotype from Sri Lanka, Alawala, 42 km (26 miles) NE Colombo, 6.III.1962, CASENT9067599, deposited in Lund University. Two female paratypes with the same data as holotype. Etymology. The species epithet is a noun in apposition from the type locality.
Diagnosis. Females of C. alawala can be distinguished by the shape of the epigynal structures, as the presence of a broad and slightly sclerotized epigynal plate, with an excavated median lobe plate and curved copulatory openings; epigynal teeth small, lateral, at outer margins of lateral lobes ( Figs 5D View FIGURE5 , 8A View FIGURE8 ); and by the copulatory ducts with one ascending spiral ( Figs 5E, F View FIGURE5 , 8B View FIGURE8 ).
DesCription. Female (holotype): Total length 4.30. Markings as in Fig. 5A–C View FIGURE5 . Carapace 2.45 long, 1.80 wide, 0.80 high; clypeus 0.10 high. Eye diameters: AME 0.09, ALE 0.16, PME 0.10, PLE 0.17. Chelicerae 0.96 long; sternum 1.20 long, 0.90 wide; labium 0.46 long; palpal coxae 0.85 long. Spination as in genus description. Leg measurements (Femur + Patella + Tibia + Metatarsus + Tarsus = [Total]): I: 1.65 + 0.88 + 1.40 + 1.30 + 0.90 = 6.13; II: 1.60 + 0.80 + 1.30 + 1.30 + 0.80 = 5.80; III: 1.50 + 0.70 + 1.00 + 1.40 + 0.85 = 5.45; IV: 1.95 + 0.75 + 1.60 + 2.45 + 1.30 = 8.05. Leg formula 4123. Epigynum: median lobe large and excavated; lateral lobes with small, lateral teeth at outer margins of lateral lobes ( Figs 5D View FIGURE5 , 8A View FIGURE8 ). Vulva with elongated and sinuous copulatory ducts, which have one ascending spiral; spermathecae large, with projections and small fertilization ducts ( Figs 5E, F View FIGURE5 , 8B View FIGURE8 ).
Variation. Female (N= 3): Total length 4.30–4.70; carapace length 2.40–2.45; femur I 1.50–1.65.
Male. Unknown.
Material examined. Only the types.
Natural history. Collection data for the specimens as described in Brinck et al. (1971: 24) refer to a low elevation site, a “hill top” at 200 m that was “covered by jungle [and] much bamboo.” C. alawala differs from other Campostichomma by occurring at low elevation: others occur in highlands above 1000 m (Brinck et al. 1971).
Distribution. Known only from the type locality at Alawala in Sri Lanka ( Fig. 14 View FIGURE14 ).
