Hoplandrothrips thailandicus sp. n.

( Figs 51 View FIGURES 43–55 , 264–270 View FIGURES 264–270 )

Female (macroptera). Distended body length: 2.7–2.8mm. Body uniformly dark brown. Antennal segments I– II dark brown, almost concolourous with head; segments III – VIII largely brown, scarcely paler than segments I– II, base and external side of segment III yellowish, basal 1/3 of segment IV and basal 1/4 of segment V partly scarcely yellowish. Legs largely dark brown; fore tibiae yellowish brown, much paler than femora, mid and hind tibiae dark brown with apices scarcely paler; tarsi yellow. Fore wing pale. All prominent setae clear. Head ( Fig. 264 View FIGURES 264–270 ) longer than wide, about 1.1 times as long as wide, dorsal surface sculptured with transverse reticulation or wrinkles, with fine reticulation in ocellar region. Cheeks convex, constricted at anterior ends, tuberculate, each with a small sub-basal seta. Postocular setae well-developed, expanded, a little shorter than eye. Eyes 0.35 times as long as head, scarcely larger in ventral surface; distance between posterior ocelli almost as long as diameter of an ocellus, 25μm apart from one another in holotype. Antennae ( Fig. 265 View FIGURES 264–270 ) about 2.0 times as long as head; segment VIII short, not strongly constricted at base, cone-shaped; segment III stout, short and wide, 1.62 times as long as wide in holotype, a little shorter than segment IV, with three stout sense cones which are a little longer than 1/2 length of the segment. Mouth cone relatively long, reaching prospinasternum; maxillary stylets retracted to eyes. Pronotum ( Fig. 264 View FIGURES 264–270 ) about 2/3 length of head, weakly sculptured with reticulation marginally; five pairs of prominent setae elongate, expanded; am well-developed, almost as long as aa, pa the longest, a little longer than 1/2 length of pronotum in holotype. Mesopresternum ( Fig. 268 View FIGURES 264–270 ) divided into two lateral large triangles and a small median area. Metanotum ( Fig. 267 View FIGURES 264–270 ) sculptured with longitudinal reticulation, median pair of setae acute, 38–40μm apart from anterior margin, 88μm apart from one another. Fore tarsal tooth ( Fig. 266 View FIGURES 264–270 ) short, directed forwards. Fore wings each with 11–13 duplicated cilia in holotype; three sub-basal setae ( Fig. 269 View FIGURES 264–270 ) expanded, S1 a little shorter than S2, S3 a little longer than S2. Pelta ( Fig. 267 View FIGURES 264–270 ) bell-shaped, with rather large lateral wings, distinctly reticulate. Tergite IX posteromarginal setae weakly expanded, S2 a little shorter than S1, S1 0.93 times as long as tube in holotype, intermediate setae slender, almost 1/2 length of S1. Tube ( Fig. 270 View FIGURES 264–270 ) 0.61 times as long as head, about 2.0 times as long as wide in holotype. Terminal setae much longer than tube.

Measurements (holotype female in μm). Body length about 2750 (distended). Head length 255, from anterior margin of eyes 235, width across eyes 212, maximum width across cheeks 235; eyes dorsal length 90, ventral length 94, width 70; diameter of posterior ocelli 21–25; postocular setae 85. Antenna total length 520, segments I–VIII length (width) as follows: 52 (43), 47 (37), 81 (50), 90 (50), 78 (39), 68 (27), 53 (23), 31 (12). Pronotum length 165, width 317. Setae on prothorax: am 50, aa 50–60, ml 50, pa 90, epim 65–70. Fore wing length 1020. Sub-basal wing setae: S1 60 –63, S2 70–72, S3 77–80. Tergite IX setae: S1 145, S2 135. Tube length 156, maximum width 77; terminal setae 215.

Male. Unknown.

Type series. Holotype: macropterous female, Thailand, Bangkok, Bangkhen, Campus of Kasetsart University, National Biological Control Research Center , on dead branches, 26.xii.1987, SO . Paratype. Thailand, nr. Chiang Mai, foot of Doi Saket , 1 female, 25.viii.1992, TN & SO .

Remarks. H. thailandicus is very similar to H. sapae described above in the shape of head and antennal segments. However, it can easily be distinguished from sapae by the following character states: head shorter, about 1.1 times as long as wide (more than 1.2 times as long as wide in sapae ); antennal segment III shorter than 2.0 times as long as wide (longer than 2.0 times in sapae ), a little shorter than segment IV (much longer than IV in sapae ); sense cones on segment III stouter, a little longer than 1/2 length of the segment (shorter than 1/2 length of the segment in sapae ).
