Scatopsciara (Xenopygina) praeawanatae sp. n.

Locus typicus: USA, Arizona, Cochise County, Huachuca Mountains , Ash Cyn. Rd. , 31.39°N, 111.24°W, oakpine woodland, 5100 ft. Holotype: Male, 5.–30.viii.1993, leg. N. McFarland, Malaise trap ( PWMP).

Description. Male. Head. Dark brown. Eye bridge 3–4 facets wide. Flagellomeres lost. Palpus 3-segmented, short; basal segment without deepened sensory area, with 2 bristles. Thorax. Brown; scutum haired short, fine and brownish. Wings pale; R1 short; c somewhat longer ½ w; y nearly 1/ 2 x, bare; posterior veins weak, bare. Haltere short, brownish. Legs yellowish-brown; tibial organ comb-like, with 4 bristles; claws toothless. Abdomen. Brown, haired fine and pale. Hypopygium brown; gonocoxites longer than gonostylus, inner ventral margin haired very sparsely. Gonostylus elongated, without tooth; with 2 small apical spines, the uppermost shorter. Tegmen wide. Body size: 1.5 mm.

Comments. This small species is similar to Sc. awanatae and Sc. subawanatae in the shape of gonostylus but differs in having two apical spines only, the uppermost distinctly shortened. The species belongs to the Sc. inesae group.

Distribution. USA (Arizona).
