Digenea simplex (Wulfen) C.Agardh

Thallus fleshy or mucilaginous, red or pink, or sometimes bleached yellowish, 15–26 cm long, axes nearly cylindrical in cross section, 240–500 μm in diameter. Main axes branching dichotomously; branches completely covered by numerous thin hair-like polysiphonous ramulli, with 5 rows of irregular cells, 5–12 μm in diameter ( Fig. 13 ). Polysiphonous organization, main axes with 9 pericentral cells, 30–40 μm in diameter ( Fig. 14 ). Medulla with 18–20 layers of rounded cells, 35–50 μm x 18–25 μm in diameter. Cortex with one layer of spherical cells, 9–14 μm in diameter ( Fig. 14 ).
