Hypnea musciformis (Wulfen) J.V.Lamouroux

Thallus fleshy or mucilaginous, pinkish or reddish-black, 8–16 cm long, with cylindrical axes in cross section, 470–610 μm in diameter. Pseudo-dichotomous or irregular branching; main axes and branches covered by numerous short branchlets arranged alternately opposite, thorn-like, 1–2.5 mm in diameter, with acute or curved sickle-shaped apices ( Fig. 20 ). Uniaxial organization, with a central filament from which branching of filaments occurs and joined, by secondary pit connections, several layers of irregular medullary cells are produced, 30–75 μm x 60–160 μm in diameter; no central cell is apparent in cross section ( Fig. 21 ). Cortex with one or two layers of rounded and small cells, 8–12 μm in diameter ( Fig. 21 ).
