The latest diagnosis of the genus was provided by Khaustov & Tolstikov (2015). The genus Phyllodispus comprises seven species found primarily in soil and forest litter in South America, Africa, New Guinea, and New Zealand ( Khaustov & Tolstikov 2015; Khaustov & Minor 2016). Only one species, Phyllodispus undulatus Khaustov and Minor, 2016 was previously described from New Zealand ( Khaustov & Minor 2016).
