Genus ACTEON Montfort, 1810 View in CoL

Acteon Montfort, 1810: 314-316 . Type species: Voluta tornatilis Linné, 1758 [Recent, northwest Atlantic], by original designation.

Synonyms:

Tornatella Lamarck, 1816 : pl. 452. Type species: Voluta tornatilis Linné, 1758 [Recent, northwest Atlantic], by subsequent designation of Herrmannsen (1852 [in 1846-52]).

Speo Risso, 1826: 235 . Type species: Voluta bifasciata Gmelin, 1791 [= Acteon tornatilis (Linné, 1758) , Recent, Northwest Atlantic], by monotypy.

DIAGNOSIS. — Shell morphology. Shell external, solid, oval, transversely sulcate; spire elevated, variable in shape. Aperture longitudinal, anteriorly rounded. Inner lip thickened. Columella with a single fold. Operculum present.

Anatomy. Large headshield, with a deep medial slit separating the shield into 2 posteriorly projecting lobes. Radula with numerous denticulate and small teeth.

REMARKS. — Rudman (1971c) proposed that Acteon should be used only for species with a columellar fold and numerous minute hook-shaped teeth. Other genus names are available for species with no columellar fold or radulae with a reduced number of teeth. The anatomy of numerous species and genera of Acteonidae have not been described, so it is not possible to determine their generic placement or synonymy. For the present paper, only genera based on the same type species have been included in the synonymy of Acteon .
