Parahydromys asper (Thomas, 1906) View in CoL . Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., ser. 7, 17:326.
TYPE LOCALITY: Papua, New Guinea, Central Prov., Owen Stanley Range, Richardson Range, Mt Gayata, 2000-4000 m .
DISTRIBUTION: New Guinea; Central Cordillera from Weyland Range in Irian Jaya to Owen Stanley Range in Papua New Guinea, as well as Huon Peninsula (see map in Flannery, 19905:185).
COMMENTS: Thought to be closely related to Hydromys (Flannery, 1989; Lidicker, 1968; Tate, 1951), but no critical assessment of that hypothesis has been made. Flannery (19905) provided distributional and biological notes. Donnellan (1987) provided chromosomal data.
