TYPE LOCALITY: Brazil, vicinity of Rio de Janeiro .

DISTRIBUTION: SE Brazil, E Paraguay, and NE Argentina.

SYNONYMS: fuliginosus , henseli, orycter, subterraneus .

COMMENTS: Member of Thaptomys , usually segregated as a subgenus of Akodon (Cabrera, 1961; Massoia, 1963a) though Reig (1978, 1987) considered Thaptomys a full synonym of Akodon sensu stricto. Includes subterraneus , the type of Thaptomys (see Massoia, 1963a).
