TYPE SPECIES: Akodon pulcherrimus Thomas, 1897 (= Akodon jelskii Thomas, 1894 ).

COMMENTS: Akodontine. Described as a genus ( Thomas, 1916c) but afterwards conventionally viewed as a subgenus of Akodon (Cabrera, 1961; Ellerman, 1941; Gardner and Patton, 1976; Reig, 1987). Among the most genetically divergent akodonts surveyed by Patton et al. (1989) and Smith and Patton (1991), including species of typical Akodon , Bolomys , and Microxus , and recognized by those authors as a separate genus.
