TYPE LOCALITY: Mexico, Oaxaca, below Pluma Hidalgo, 3000 ft .

DISTRIBUTION: Pacific slopes of the Sierra Madre del Sur of Oaxaca, Mexico.

COMMENTS: Although named as a subspecies of P. megalops, Huckaby (1980) substantiated the specific status and range of melanurus . P. megalops species group.
