COMMENTS: Subfamily systematics very provisional. Cabrera (1925) proposed a division into five subfamilies, three of which are applied here, following Yates (1984), among others. Scalopinae and Condylurinae are tentatively treated as tribes, following Hutchison (1968). Desmana and Galemys are sometimes placed in a separate family, Desmanidae; see Bobrinskii et al. (1965).
