Description: — Thalli strongly calcified, crustaceous, provided with dense and irregularly branched excrescences. Hypothallus composed of one layer of cells, some with unicellular or multicellular rhizoids. Perithallus in longitudinal section differentiated into two zones, one with several large cells and the other with several small cells that may overlap alternately, thickening the crust. Cell-fusions between neighboring filaments common; secondary pit connections present or absent. Epithallium composed of 1-3 layers of small cells, heterocyst often present among epidermal cells. Tetrasporangial nemathecia prominent above the surface; tetrasporangia cruciate. Gametophytic specimens were not observed in the present study.
