Type spec ies Mutilla phoebe Péringuey, 1899 , ♁, by subsequent designation of Bischoff 1921: 710.
Diagnosis. MALE. Head normal shape, rounded dorsoposteriorly. Mandible not widened to apex, with weak subbsal tooth beneath, preapical inner tooth distinctly smaller than apical one, inner subbasal tooth much larger than apical one. F1 significantly shorter than F2. Flagellomeres overlapped, F1–5 with row of tyloids. T2 without medial subbasal spot of white setae. S2 with short lateral felt lines. T7 with cuticular yellowish spot. Penial valves short, their apex curved and oriented outside. FEMALE. Unknown.
Diversity and distribution. Only known by the type species (male only), which is recognized from South Africa .
Remarks. Based on a recent molecular phylogenetic analysis (Waldren et al. in press), this genus belongs in a new tribe.
