Santa Maria material examined. Maximum height 35.5 mm, width 16.0 mm. One specimen from LNEG collection (unnumbered), locality unknown, Santa Maria Island, Lower Pliocene.

Discussion. Plagioconus species are characterised by their elongated last whorl, convex spire whorls and shallow subsutural flexure ( Tucker & Tenorio, 2009: 111; Harzhauser & Landau, 2016: 127). They also can have relatively high spires. The Azorean material is represented by one internal mould that probably represents a very high spire conid shell. However, we do not exclude the possibility of this being the internal mould of an unusually slender strombid.

The presence of Plagioconus in the Lower Pliocene of Santa Maria would be interesting if confirmed, as the genus is known only from the Miocene ( Tucker & Tenorio, 2009: 111; Harzhauser & Landau, 2016: 127-141). In European Miocene assemblages, Plagioconus is found in fully tropical assemblages.

Distribution. Lower Pliocene: Atlantic, Santa Maria Island, Azores (this paper).
