Subcapitular setae m generally with 3 tines (in specimens from Microtus gregalis with 2 tines, in some specimens from Microtus (Terricola) spp. and Chionomys with 4 tines). Setae vi distinctly wider than e2. Setae e1 and f1 narrow lanceolate. Distances c1-d1 and d1-d2 subequal. Vulvar region distinctly ornamented. Setae ps3 distinctly developed, slightly curved. Setae ag2 at least twice longer than ag1. Setae 1b and 1d about 1.5 times thicker than 1a. Setae 2a and 3a whip-like, much longer than 2b. Trochanter I with distinct ventral projection and without tubercles. Measurements (10 specimens from Microtus arvalis , Crimea): body, including gnathosoma, 390–450 long, 230–260 maximum wide. Lengths of setae: vi 50–60, ve 95–110, si 90–110, se 70–85, c1 50–60, c2 70–80, d1 60–70, d2 65–75, e1 25 –30, e2 45 –48, f1 25–35, 2a 80–100, 3a 75–100, 4a 30–35.

Measurements (10 specimens from Microtus arvalis , Crimea): body, including gnathosoma, 300–340 long, 180–200 maximum wide. Aedeagus 110–130 long. Lengths of setae: vi 17–20, ve 80–90, si 28–33, se 80–95, c2 90–100, e1 55 –65, e2 30 –35, f1 20–25, 2a 80–100, 3a 15–23, 4a 30–40.

FEMALE TRITONYMPH ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 ). Setae f2 and h2 stick-like, other dorsal idiosomal setae narrow lanceolate. Length of setae 3a and 4a highly variable ( Table 1). Tarsus IV with 4 setae.

Remarks. I examined specimens of this species, including female TN, from a wide range of its hosts ( Figs. 5– 7 View FIGURE 5 View FIGURE 6 View FIGURE 7 ). In female TN, the lengths of idiosomal setae are highly variable, especially lengths of ventral setae 3a and 4a ( Table 1). Unfortunately, distinctions between some subspecies and species which are closely related to Radfordia lemnina lemnina were based on the lengths of setae 3a and 4a and, therefore, status of these taxa should be reconsidered.

(i) I re-examined the holotype of R. lemnina micromys Fain and Lukoschus, 1976 described from Micromys minutus ( Muridae ) ( Holland) ( Fain & Lukoschus 1976, 1977) and three specimens of this subspecies from the same host from Russia (Chelyabinsk Prov.). These specimens are not distinguishable from females of Radfordia lemnina lemnina parasitizing voles. Discriminative measurements of R. lemnina micromys provided by Fain & Lukoschus (1977), actually, do not differentiate it from the specimens from the type host ( Microtus arvalis ) (see diagnosis of Radfordia lemnina ). Thus, I consider the subspecies R. lemnina micromys syn. nov. as a junior synonym of Radfordia lemnina .

(ii) Radfordia lemnina hata Uchikawa, Nakata and Takahashi, 1997 was described from Microtus montebelli from Japan ( Uchikawa et al. 1997). The adults of this species are not distinguishable from R. lemnina lemnina . In females of R. lemnina hata , setae m bear four tines (vs. three tines in R. lemnina lemnina from the type host). In females of R. lemnina lemnina from different hosts, however, these setae also have four teeth ( Figs. 5 View FIGURE 5 , 7 View FIGURE 7 ). At the same time, some specimens of R. lemnina hata have setae m with three teeth ( Uchikawa et al. 1997). Males of R. lemnina hata have a slightly longer genital cone than in the nominate form and according to Uchikawa et al. (1997): “p. 674, no other distinctive characters and measurements that warrant subspecies rank have been found in the male [ R. lemnina hata —my note]”. However, I observed the same shape of the genital cone in the nominate form from different hosts ( Figs. 5–7 View FIGURE 5 View FIGURE 6 View FIGURE 7 ). The main difference of this subspecies from the nominate form is whip-like setae 3a of female TN, which are much longer than those in female TN from Microtus agrestis (mistakenly considered by Uchikawa et al. [1997] as the type host of R. lemnina lemnina ). In the female TN of R. lemnina lemnina , the lengths of these setae are highly variable not only in specimens from different host species (see Table 1) but also in specimens from different geographical localities from the same host species. Moreover, these setae can vary in the same mite specimen being strongly asymmetric; this phenomenon was observed also by Uchikawa et al. (1997). Thus, I consider subspecies R. lemnina hata syn. nov. as a junior synonym of Radfordia lemnina .

(iii) Like Uchikawa et al. (1997), Bochkov & Mironov (1998) overestimated such characters as the length of setae 3a and 4a in female TNs when describing Radfordia stekolnikovi Bochkov and Mironov, 1998 from Chionomys nivalis (North West Caucasus) and Radfordia stenocrani Bochkov and Mironov, 1998 from Microtus gregalis ( Russia, Chelyabinsk Prov.). In both these species, adults are almost not discernible from those of Radfordia lemnina (from the type host), but female TNs have whip-like setae 3a and 4a. The examination of these characters in mites from different hosts and geographical localities showed that they are too variable and can not serve for species differentiation. I consider, therefore, the species Radfordia stekolnikovi syn. nov. and R. stenocrani syn. nov. as junior synonyms of Radfordia lemnina .

(iv) Subspecies Radfordia lemnina mikado Uchikawa et al., 1997 from Myodes rutilus mikado and R. lemnina japonica Uchikawa et al., 1997 from Myodes rufocanus , Myodes rex , Myodes andersoni , and Myodes smithii described from Japan ( Uchikawa et al. 1997) are synonymized by me with Radfordia clethrionomys and Radfordia rufocani , respectively. Reasons for such taxonomical decisions are provided under respective sections (see below).

Type host and locality. Microtus arvalis from Germany ( Koch 1841). Later on, Radford (1935) recorded it from Microtus agrestis from England. Since this record some authors ( Fain & Lukoschus 1977; Uchikawa et al. 1997) mistakenly indicated Microtus agrestis as the type host for this species.

Hosts and distribution. This species is associated with Eurasian voles of the genera Microtus and Chionomys ; it has probably secondarily switched to Micromys minutus ( Muridae ). The record of this species from Peromyscus maniculatus from USA ( Allred 1957), probably, should be referred to Radfordia subuliger Ewing, 1938 belonging to the species group “ subuliger ”, incertae sedis in the genus Radfordia ( Fain & Bochkov 2002) . The finding of R. lemnina on Microtus ochrogaster from USA (Indiana) by Whitaker and Wilson (1968) needs confirmation and could be referred to Radfordia hylandi . The records of R. lemnina on Apodemus sylvaticus (Muridae) from Czech Republic ( Dusbabek & Daniel 1975), Apodemus flavicollis from Bulgaria ( Beron 1973), Apodemus agrarius and Mus musculus from Poland ( Kielczewski et al. 1974)—all from the family Muridae are obviously accidental. The list of hosts for this mite species provided by Haitlinger (1988) includes improbable hosts. Haitlinger (1988) recorded R. lemnina not only on different rodents but even on shrews. In my opinion such unexpected findings are results of mechanical contamination during collecting and, therefore, the results of this author are not taken into consideration here.
