Specimen examined (total 3 specimens). Holotype: male ( SCAU), “ China, Guangdong Prov., Chebaling Nature Reserve , 1989.3.21, Chen Shoujian leg.’’ / “HOLOTYPE, Chlaenius (Chlaenioctenus) cheni n. sp., des. by Liu & Liang, 2012” [red label] . Chen Shoujian” / “PARATYPE, Chlaenius (Chlaenioctenus) cheni n. sp., des. by Liu & Liang, 2012” [yellow label]; 1 female ( IZCAS), “ China, Guangdong Prov., Chebaling Nature Reserve , 2003.7, An Shuwen leg.’’ / “PARATYPE, Chlaenius (Chlaenioctenus) cheni n. sp., des. by Liu & Liang, 2012” [yellow label].
Measurements. BL = 14.8−16.2 mm (mean = 15.4 mm), HW = 2.6−2.7 mm (mean = 2.6 mm), EYL = 1.0 mm, PL = 3.3−3.4 mm (mean = 3.4 mm), PW = 3.5−3.7 mm (mean = 3.6mm), EL = 8.7−9.5 mm (mean = 9.1mm), EW = 5.2−5.7 mm (mean = 5.5 mm), ratio PW/PL = 1.06−1.09 (mean = 1.07), EL/EW = 1.58−1.70 (mean = 1.65), EW/PW = 1.49−1.58 (mean = 1.53).
Description. Head and pronotum black, with green metallic shine; elytra black, with a round yellow spot at posterior third of each elytron; ventral surface, coxae, trochanters, and tibiae black; antennae brown; palpi, tarsi reddish brown or dark brown; femora yellow in the middle portion, black at base and apex.
Head with vertex convex, finely punctate; occiput coarsely punctate and sparsely pubescent; genae glabrous, oblique, as long as one-fifth of eyes in dorsal view; lateral margins of mentum rounded. Pronotum ( Fig. 20 View FIGURES 20–25 ) ovoid, widest in the middle; lateral margins distinctly bordered, sinuate before posterior angles; disc finely punctate, pubescent, median line distinct, shallow; posterior angles obtuse (>90 degrees), rounded at apex; base rugosepunctate, pubescent; basal foveae deep, coarsely punctate. Elytra moderately convex, widest near posterior third; intervals ( Fig. 26 View FIGURES 26–31 ) convex, densely punctate and pubescent; yellow spot covering intervals 4−8. Proepisterna sparsely punctate. Hind femora with basal black areas slightly shorter than hind trochanters, claws ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 32–37 ) curved, with 6−7 short teeth. Aedeagus ( Figs. 38, 39 View FIGURES 38–47 ) thin in lateral view, apical lamella rounded and short. Gonostylus ( Fig. 48 View FIGURES 48–51 ) of female ovipositor with five long spines on outer margin.
Etymology. Latinized name cheni refers to Professor Chen Shoujian, a respected carabid specialist in China.
Remarks. Chlaenius cheni is similar to C. sehnali in having yellow spot on posterior third of elytron and femora yellow in the middle portion, but differs from the latter in having pronotal disc finely punctate and elytral intervals regularly pubescent in contrast to pronotal disc coarsely punctate and elytral intervals glabrous medially in C. sehnali .
C. freyi is the nearest species with C. cheni in distribution ( Fig. 52 View FIGURE 52 ), and their position of yellow spots and interval pubescence on elytra are also similar. However, the new species differs from C. freyi in having bicolored femora (wholly black in C. freyi ), and long gonostylus spines ( Fig. 48 View FIGURES 48–51 ) (very short in C. freyi ).
