( Figs. 17, 18 View FIGURES 17–18 , 23 View FIGURES 20–25 , 29 View FIGURES 26–31 , 35 View FIGURES 32–37 , 44, 45 View FIGURES 38–47 )

Specimen examined (total 1 specimens). Holotype: male (NHMB), “N. Vietnam (Tonkin), Tamdao , 12− 24.5.1989, Pacholatko leg.” / “Freiwlliger, Museumsverein, Basel, 1989” / “ HOLOTYPE, Chlaenius (Chlaenioctenus) aodai n. sp., des. by Liu & Liang, 2012’’ [red label].

Measurements. BL = 16.6 mm, HW = 2.6 mm, EYL = 1.0 mm, PL = 3.5 mm, PW = 3.5 mm, EL = 9.5 mm, EW = 5.2 mm, ratio PL/PW = 1.0, EL/EW = 1.83, EW/PW = 1.49.

Description. Head and pronotum black, with distinct metallic shine; elytra black, with weak shine; coxae, trochanters, tibiae, antennomeres 2 and 3 black or dark brown; antennomeres 1 and 4−11, mandibles, palpi and tarsi reddish brown; femora yellow in the middle portion, black at base and apex, basal black areas on hind femora longer than hind trochanters.

Head convex, vertex and occiput punctate; genae glabrous, oblique, as long as one-fourth of eyes in dorsal view; lateral margins of mentum rounded. Pronotum ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 20–25 ) long-ovoid, widest in the middle; lateral margins indistinctly bordered, sinuate before posterior angles; disc finely punctate, glabrous, median line distinct; posterior angles nearly rectangular, rounded at apex; base punctate, basal foveae deep, sparsely punctate. Elytra moderately convex, widest near posterior third; intervals ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 26–31 ) slightly convex, with regular punctures and pubescence; yellow spot at posterior third of each elytron, small, covering half interval 4 to interval 8. Proepisterna very sparsely punctate. Hind femora with basal black areas slightly longer than hind trochanters, claws ( Fig. 35 View FIGURES 32–37 ) curved, with 5−6 short teeth. Aedeagus ( Figs. 44, 45 View FIGURES 38–47 ) moderately robust in lateral view, apical lamella rounded and short.

Etymology. Latinized name aodai refers to Ao Dai, a traditional costume of Vietnamese women, implying that the new species is discovered from Vietnam.

Remarks. Chlaenius aodai is similar to C. cheni and C. sehnali in having yellow spot at posterior third of each elytron, but differs from C. cheni in having pronotum wider than long contrast to pronotum wider than long in C. cheni , and from C. sehnali in having all elytral intervals regularly pubescent and pronotal disc finely punctate in contrast to intervals glabrous medially and pronotal disc coarsely punctate in C. sehnali .
