Common name. River pea mussel
Morphology. Small bivalve. The oval rounded shell with rounded umbo lying posterior of the midpoint. It reaches 11 mm in length, 7 mm in height, and 6 mm in depth. For more details see Welter-Schultes (2012: 18, figure at the bottom of the page).
Distribution and ecology. Palearctic species occurring throughout most of Europe. It has been introduced to the eastern part of North America and Africa ( Moorkens & Killeen 2009; Graf & Cummings 2021). Inhabits muddy and silty substrate in a wide range of lowland habitats such as streams, rivers, canals and large drainage ditches ( Moorkens & Killeen 2009). In Serbia, it was found in the Danube.
Other remarks. This is the largest species of Pisidium occurring in Europe. It has 15 nominal species used as synonyms ( Graf & Cummings 2021). It has LC status on the IUCN Red List (Van Damme et al. 2011).
