Findings in Serbia.

Pisidium casertanum: Tomović et al. (2014) .

Common name. Caserta pea mussel.

Morphology. Small bivalve. Oval shell typically has length 3.7–5.3 mm, height 3.1–4.4 mm, and depth 2.4–2.9 mm ( Moorkens & Killeen 2009). For more details see Welter-Schultes (2012: 19, figure on the top of the page).

Distribution and ecology. Worldwide distribution, in fact this is one of the most widespread species of freshwater molluscs in the world. It is known from the Palearctic and Nearctic regions and some parts of South America, Africa, Australia and Asia, inhabiting the widest possible range of freshwater habitats and substrates ( Van Damme et al. 2016). In Serbia, it has been found in the Danube River.

Other remarks. Being cosmopolitan/widespread this species has high morphological variability, harboring many morphotypes. As many as 178 nominal species are known as synonyms ( Graf & Cummings 2021). On the IUCN Red List it has been assessed as LC ( Van Damme et al. 2016).
