The protologue of Hieracium cataractarum (Arvet-Touvet & Huter in Arvet-Touvet & Gautier 1894: 330) includes a complete description in French followed by the locality “ Hab. Regnum murcicum, in rupium fissuris cataractarum los Chorros, sol. calc. 800–1000m ”, and a reference to a concrete gathering “ Porta et Rigo ex Itinere hispanico, III, 1891, nº 395”.

Gottschlich (2007: 34) designated as the lectotype of H. cataractarum a specimen preserved in the Huter herbarium at BRIX (no. BRIX –8361), belonging to the exsiccata cited in the protologue. We have found additionally four specimens belonging to the gathering cited in the protologue (Itinere hispanico, III, 1891, nº 395) that according to Art. 9.6 and Art. 40 Note 1 of the ICN (see Turland et al. 2018), are syntypes. They are located in the herbarium MA (consisting of two complete plants), BM (a specimen that bears three plants, see Fig. 4 ), S (a sheet containing three plants and the same printed label (image available at http://herbarium.nrm.se/specimens/ S 12-20976)), and at JE (containing three plants of this species, and the same printed label) (image available at http://131.130.131.10/ herbaria/jacq-viewer/viewer.html?rft_id=je_00005210&identifiers=je_00005210). In all the original labels of this Porta and Rigo’s exsiccatum is printed “ Hieracium catarractarum Arv.Touv n.sp. 1892 / in lit.”. However, the epithet “ catarractarum ” was later corrected to “ cataractarum ” in the protologue by Arvet-Touvet and Huter.

In our opinion, all the specimens from the above herbarium match with the traditional concept and current usage of the name H. cataractarum .

Taxonomic remarks:—This species is closely related to H. aragonense having been sometimes included in its synonymy (Mateo et al. 2017) or being recognised at subspecies level within H. aragonense ( Zahn 1921; Bolòs & Vigo 1996; Greuter & Raab-Straube 2008). The Balearic reports of H. cataractarum belongs in fact to H. majoricanum (see below).
