Hieracium majoricanum Arvet-Touvet (1913: 313) View in CoL [‘ majorcanum ’]

H. bifidum subsp. majoricanum (Arv.-Touv.) Malagarriga (1977: 1332) [“ majorcanum ”]

Type (lectotype, designated here):— [ SPAIN. Balearic Islands, Mallorca], Puig Mayor , 1400 m, 20 June 1911, F. Bianor s.n. ( GRM code MHNGr.1914.44167!) ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 ); isolectotype: BC [ BC –Sennen without number] !

The protologue of Hieracium majoricanum , with number 357, comprises a complete description followed by the provenance “Hab. Espagne: in Insulis Balearicis: Majorque, au Puig Mayor, vers 1400 m; Juin. Jul. (Frère Bianor de Solér [Sóller]), etc.” ( Arvet-Touvet 1913: 313).

In the GRM herbarium there is a specimen, with code MHNGr.1914.44167, from the gathering cited in the protologue, collected by Bianor (see below) at “Puig Mayor”, which can be treated as a syntype ( ICN Art. 9.6). This specimen is a complete and well-developed plant, with leaves, flowers and fruits, which is accompanied by two labels. One label is annotated as: “ H. majorcanum”, and the second labels is annotated as: “Plantes d’Espagne / Hieracium Majorcanum sp. n. Arv.–Touv. / Baléares: Majorque au Puig Mayor / vers 1400 m. / 1911–20–VI / Fre Sennen / Leg. F. Bianor” ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 ) .

Marie Émile Friquenon (named Brother Bianor) (1859–1920) was a Brother of La Salle, botanist and French explorer. He lived many years in Mallorca, and contributed appreciably to the study of its flora. The herbarium sheet preserved at GRM may have been sent to Arvet-Touvet via Étienne Marcellin Granier-Blanc (named Brother Sennen), as part of his exsiccata “Plantes d’Espagne”. Bianor sent many herbarium sheets to Sennen. We have found a duplicate of the specimen at GRM of H. majoricanum in the Sennen herbarium at BC. However, we have not found other duplicates in the Bianor herbarium (i.e., at the Herbarium of the Botanical Garden of Sóller [which includes the herbarium of the Museum “La Salle de Palma” and the herbarium of the Museum “La Salle de Pont d’Inca”], the herbarium of the Museum “La Salle de Paterna” in Valencia, or the herbarium of the Museum “La Salle Bonanova” in Barcelona) (see Nualart & Ibañez 2015, La Salle Bonanova 2016, Marmaneu et al. 2018).

The specimen at BC –Sennen bears a complete and well-developed plant, with leaves and capitula, and an original label, annotated as “Plantes d’Espagne / Hieracium majorcanum A.- T. in litt. / sericeum sp. nov. / phlomoides (D. C.) / Puig Mayor / 1911, 20 Juin / Fre. Sennen / Hno. Bianor” handwritten by Bianor .

Among the original material located at GRM and BC –Sennen, we designate as the lectotype of the name H. majoricanum the specimen preserved at GRM because it is the most complete and informative material .

Taxonomic remarks:— Hieracium majoricanum has been included into the synonymy of H. elisaeanum ( Greuter & Raab-Straube 2008, Mateo et al. 2017) or H. loscosianum ( Mateo & Egido 2017) most likely by a misunderstanding of the protologue and lack of studies of the original material. In our opinion, H. majoricanum should not be ascribed to H. eliaseanum due to several diagnostic morphological features. In fact, the Balearic plant should be included within the so-called H. aragonense group ( Mateo & Egido 2017), most likely a non-natural lineage only comprising polyploid plants. Preliminary results suggest that H. majoricanum mainly differs from the closely related H. aragonense by indumentum features; its stems and pedicels are densely covered by numerous stellate hairs (vs. glabrous, or rarely sparsely hairy) and the phyllaries are densely covered by glandular hairs (vs. sparsely hairy).
