Hieracium microscapum Arvet-Touvet (1913: 307) View in CoL
≡ H. bifidum var. microscapum (Arv.–Touv.) Malagarriga (1977: 1332)
Type (lectotype, designated here):— [ SPAIN. Balearic Islands, Mallorca ], Insulae Baleares: Mallorca: Coma den Arbona, 2800’, 25 Mai 1899, Gandoger s.n. ( GRM code MHNGr.1914.44032!) ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 ) .
The protologue of H. microscapum consists of a complete description of this species followed by the geographical locality “Hab. Espagne: Insulis Balearibus: Mallorca: Coma den Arbona, in rupium fissuris, alt. 2800’; 25 mai 1899 (Gandoger)” ( Arvet-Touvet 1913: 307). In the GRM herbarium there is a specimen fitting the protologue and therefore it can be treated as a syntype. This specimen comprises two not-fully developed plants, showing leaves and incipient capitula. The sheet bears two labels, an original one handwritten by Arvet-Touvet “ Hieracium microscapum sp. n. / Arv.–Touv. et Gandog. / Insulae Baleares: Mallorca: Coma den / Arbona, in fissuris rupium; alt. / 2800’; 25 Mai 1899 (Gandoger)” ( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 ), and an additional label that is annotated “apparemment pieds non développés / de H. majorcanum A. T.” in the handwriting of the French botanist Henri L. Sudre (1862–1918) (Matthieu Lefebvre, pers. comm.) .
Michel Gandoger (1850–1926) was a French botanist and his herbarium is currently kept at LY, with duplicates present in many herbaria ( Stafleu & Cowan 1976). Despite this, we have been unable to locate any further original material in his own herbarium or in the other consulted herbaria where Gandoger exsicata are distributed (e.g., LY, MPU, P, etc.). Therefore, we designate the specimen at GRM, as the lectotype of the name H. microscapum .
Taxonomic remarks:— Hieracium microscapum is indistinguishable from H. majoricanum as indicated by H. L. Sudre. All evidences indicate that it is a non mature flowering specimen of the later, which is currently growing at the type locality. The alleged identity with H. elisaeanum ( Mateo 2008; Mateo & Egido 2017, Mateo et al. 2017) should not be verified.
