Type:— CHILE. Coquimbo: Dpto. Elqui, Camino Internacional a San Juan , Puente Las Terneras , 22 km al interior de Guanta, 1650 m, 07 January 1967, Ricardi, Marticorena & Matthei 1802 (holotype: CONC!; isotype: OS!, image of the isotype available at http://plants. jstor.org/stable/10.5555/al.ap.specimen.os0000281) .

Description: ―Shrubs (nanophanerophyte) up to 20 cm. Stem woody at the base, branched, branches twisted, sulcate, glabrous to minutely pulverulent. Leaves opposite (sometimes with 2 additional smaller leaves), shortly petiolate (0.4 − 1.0 mm long), blade obovate to orbicular, 5.0 − 9.0 × 4.0 − 9.0 mm, apex rounded, base obtuse, pulverulent when young. Inflorescence terminal, dichotomous dense cymes, 4 − 6-branched; bracts ovate, scarious. Flowers subsessile; sepals 5, ovate-orbicular (1.9 − 2.5 mm long), obtuse, 1-nerved, keeled, broadly hyaline on margins; petals 5, oblong (1.3 − 1.5 mm long), shorter than the sepals, obtuse, entire, white; stamens 5, perigynous; style 1, stigmas 3. Fruits (capsule) trigonous-ovoid (1.0 − 1.1 × 1.5 − 1.6 mm), longer than the calyx, opening in non-involute valves; seeds 3 − 7, lunate-fusiform, nearly smooth on the surface, brown.

Phenology:— Flowering October to Febraury.

Habitat:— Paths at 1200–1650 m.

Distribution: ―Endemic to Chile, Coquimbo (Gereau & Marticonema 1995).
