Status in Afghanistan. First record from Afghanistan by Coad (2014: 144) as Crossocheilus diplochilus ; confirmed by Coad (2015: 228) as Gonorhynchus diplochilus ( Heckel 1838) .—Afghanistan materials: CMN, USNM.
Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan: Khost, Chamkani River drainage.—General distribution: Indus, Sistan and Helmand Rivers, Pakistan, India, Iran and Afghanistan.—Habitat: This species occurs in freshwater streams, rivers, canals, lakes, and Qantas, which are gently sloping man-made underground channels. It prefers lakes and main riverbanks in the least rapid reaches, where it shelters in pebbles and stones to avoid strong currents. It primarily feeds on filamentous algae, diatoms, and organic detritus. Freshwater.
Economic importance. No commercial importance.
Conservation. Conservation status in Afghanistan: Unknown.—IUCN: LC ( Daniels 2021d).—Threats: AQU, ABS, FIT, CON, COM, CLI, EUT, TOU.—High sensitivity to human activities.—Not considered as a keystone species.—Decline status: Unknown.—Moderate priority for conservation action.
