Original description: Cyprinus jaya Hamilton, 1822: 333 View in CoL , 392 (Mainai, Ganges River, northern Bihar, India; no types preserved).— Afghanistan synonyms: Aspidoparia jaya ( Hamilton, 1822) View in CoL ; Leuciscus margarodes McClelland, 1839 View in CoL .—Revisions: None.—Illustration: Britz (2019: pl. 202).
Status in Afghanistan. First record from Afghanistan by McClelland (1842) as Leuciscus margarodes ; confirmed by Coad (1981: 9 as Aspidoparia jaya ; 2014: 131; 2015: 227).—Afghanistan materials: None.
Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan: Kabul River.—General distribution: Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Bangladesh.—Habitat: This species inhabits streams and ponds in plains and mountainous regions. Freshwater.
Economic importance. Locally consumed, but of no commercial importance.
Conservation. Conservation status in Afghanistan: Unknown.—IUCN: LC ( Chaudhry 2010a).—Threats: FIT.— Low sensitivity to human activities.—Not considered as a keystone species.—Decline status: Decreasing.— Low priority for conservation action.
