Taxonomy. Original description: Abramis pekinensis Basilewsky, 1855: 239 View in CoL , pl. 6, fig. 2 [rivers leading to Tschili (Chihli) Bay, China; syntypes: ZIN 5637 (3)].— Afghanistan synonyms: None.—Revisions: Berg (1949: 802).—Illustration: Basilewsky (1855: pl. 6, fig. 2) as Abramis pekinensis View in CoL ; Berg (1949: 803, fig. 549).
Status in Afghanistan. First record from Afghanistan Coad (2014: 318).—Afghanistan materials: None.
Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan: Amu Darya.—General distribution: East Asia: China and Russia; introduced elsewhere.—Habitat: This species occurs in rivers and lakes. This species prefers quiet, slowly flowing or stagnant waters, areas flooded in summer. It makes seasonal migrations, as in the summer it stays in lakes and floodplains, and in the winter it goes into riverbeds. This species feeds on aquatic plants, diatoms and blue-green algae, detritus, less often small crustaceans, rotifers and molluscs. Freshwater.
Economic importance. Commercially important.
Reasons of introduction. Fisheries: enhancement of wild stocks and sports fishing.
Conservation. Not relevant (introduced species).
