Taxonomy. Original description: Cyprinus vagra Hamilton, 1822: 269 View in CoL , 385 (Ganges River at Patna, India; no types preserved].— Afghanistan synonyms: Opsarius vagra ( Hamilton, 1822) ; Leuciscus margarodes McClelland, 1839 View in CoL .—Revisions: None.—Illustration: Talwar & Jhingran (1991: 353, fig.).
Status in Afghanistan. First record from Afghanistan by Banarescu and Nalbant (1975); confirmed by Coad (1981: 9; 2014: 131; 2015: 227).—Afghanistan materials: None.
Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Afghanistan: Khost River, Matun River, Chamkani River drainage, Kabul River.—General distribution: Himalaya Foothills, Pakistan, India, Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar.— Habitat: This species inhabits streams and ponds in plains and mountainous regions. Typically found at an altitude of up to 1,769 meters. Freshwater.
Economic importance. No commercial importance.
Conservation. Conservation status in Afghanistan: Unknown.—IUCN: LC (Vishwanath 2010a).—Threats: FIT, HAB, EUT, CON, ABS.—Low sensitivity to human activities.—Not considered as a keystone species.— Decline status: Decreasing.—Low priority for conservation action.
